What is a "trim size" and which one should I choose?

A trim size is the final dimension of a book after it has been printed and cut. Choosing the correct trim size is essential for print publishing.

  • Ebook Sizes: Options like "Kindle EBook" are for digital-only formats. They are simple image files with no back cover, spine, or "bleed" (extra margin for printing).
  • Print Sizes: Options like "5.50x8.50 inch" or "6.00x9.00 inch" are for physical paperbacks. These formats include the necessary bleed area required by printers like Amazon KDP. You must select a print size to be able to create a full paperback cover (with spine and back).
  • Which to Choose: You should select the trim size that matches the requirements of your chosen publisher or printing service. If you are unsure, 6x9 inches and 5.5x8.5 inches are very common for novels.
  • Custom Sizes: We also offer a "Custom Size" option where you can input your own width, height, and bleed dimensions in either inches or millimeters.
